Bio

Throughout my life as an artist, I have had the opportunity to explore many different creative disciplines and mediums. Primarily having a background in oils and other traditional media, I also specialize in digital concept art, including character and environment design, and puppet fabrication. Before and after getting a BFA in Entertainment Design, my experience as a professional artist includes exhibiting and selling oil paintings and working as a freelance character and environment designer for video games and television. In addition to my degree, I have had the privilege of developing my skills through workshops with Mian Situ, concept development classes with Marty A. Kline, and many other teachers, professors, and instructors who have poured into me as much as I try to pour into my students.

Art is truly one of the most wonderful aspects of human nature. As I continue my journey, I have learned that being able to explore and create freely is crucial, whether you’re a lifelong artist or someone simply wanting to try something new. However, that’s not to discredit the importance of learning the basic rules before you can break them. Building a strong understanding of observation, composition, perspective, value, color, and technique gives students the confidence to grow, experiment, and cultivate their own creative voice.

As a former homeschool student and WTMA alumna, I know firsthand how meaningful a supportive learning environment can be. To understand my approach to teaching, one must recognize that art is a beast of its own. The opportunity to help build a healthy, inspiring, and educated relationship with art is one I do not take lightly. For many of us, our work is very personal, and it can be especially hard to allow ourselves grace as we learn to hone our skills. I strive to create an environment that is hands-on, curious, and open for experimentation. Through a blend of lessons, demonstrations, in-class work time, and constructive critique, my goal is to help students build strong artistic foundations while cultivating confidence, creativity, interest, and lifelong appreciation for the artistic process.

Question & Answer

What do you like best about WTMA?

As a former student, my answer is fueled by my firsthand experiences. Every teacher in each class makes an effort to take an out-of-the-box approach to spice up the material in a constantly engaging way. The ability to have not only instructors that genuinely care about what they teach, but also the online playground to make the classes engaging and lessons personal is a big part of why WTMA was so effective for me as a student, but also is what has drawn me back as an instructor.
