The Well-Trained Mind Academy is hiring individuals to join our substitute and tutoring pool for middle school and high school Japanese.
Our world language instructors use a combination of Comprehensible Input and explicit grammatical instruction, fitting with the goals of a classical education. Applicants should be well versed in second language acquisition theory and the ACTFL world-readiness standards for language learning. The successful candidate will be comfortable instructing students with a goal of developing proficiency in the target language. Position Description
Applicants should have availability to teach live, online sections during the school day (Eastern Time Zone). Prospective tutors are able to hold sessions during working business hours, evenings, and the weekends.
Substitutes are provided with slides, lecture outlines, and assessments. Substitutes do not need to develop their own lesson plans, lectures, or assessments; all materials are provided to the substitute.
Substitute teachers may be considered for a regular teaching position in subsequent school years.
Classes are taught live using Class Collaborate.
Substitutes are contracted on a course-by-course basis, and for varying durations, depending on needs. All classes are offered during regular business hours in the Eastern Time Zone, and the successful applicant must have consistent part-time availability during the regular school day. Joining the substitute and/or the tutoring pool does not guarantee a minimum number of hours; our substitutes and tutors receive positions on an as-needed basis.
The position requires reliable high-speed internet.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Japanese, East Asian Studies, or a related field
- Demonstrable skill in teaching introductory level Japanese
- Native or near-native Japanese language proficiency
- Comfortable using Google Drive
- Experience using conferencing software in an educational setting
- Comfortable stepping into a classroom where the primary teacher structured the classroom assignments and expectations
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching online
- 5+ years of experience teaching Japanese
- Lived in Japanese-speaking community for 6+ months
- Experience teaching in a virtual setting
- Experience teaching students with learning differences such as autism, dyslexia, or executive function issues
- Experience with a classical approach to education
Compensation
Substitutes will be contracted on a weekly basis, at the rate of $130/section/week. A section meets for two or three contact hours a week; compensation covers teaching the live class plus grading.
Tutors are compensated $45/hour.

Our writing courses fall into three groups: basic writing skills, intermediate composition skills (expository writing), and rhetoric. You can read more about our writing sequence here.
Prospective substitutes should have availability to teach live, online sections of expository writing during the school day (Eastern Time Zone). Prospective tutors are able to hold sessions during working business hours, evenings, and the weekends.
Substitutes and tutors can be considered for teaching appointments in subsequent academic years.

- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in English, Composition, or a related field
- Comfortable using Google Drive
- Experience using conferencing software in an educational setting
- Can comfortably work using a screen for several hours in a row
- Ability to balance several tasks at once (delivering lessons while also managing chat, addressing student behavior in real time, ability to answer questions in real time)
- Engaging presentation style, with ability to monitor student engagement and interest
- Comfortable stepping into a classroom where the primary teacher structured the classroom assignments and expectations
Preferred Qualifications
- Middle school and/or high school teaching experience (in a classroom and/or a homeschool setting.)
- Experience with Blackboard, Canvas, or another LMS
- Experience teaching in a virtual setting
