Juliette Richards and Aaleyah Khan impressed Reading for the Logic Stage II teacher Margaret Strickler with their projects for The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Students were asked to pick a page from the novel, “one that paints a picture in your mind,” and then to respond creatively by putting together a visual representation of what they saw in their head.

Each student displayed a deep understanding of the source material, and their ability to communicate rich and original takes on this popular book is inspirational even to those who have revisited this powerful story many times like Mrs. Strickler.

Mrs. Strickler said of the works, “Both of the submissions were outstanding for their level of creativity and attention to detail. They also both offered new insights into the text, and gave me a new perspective on a book I am quite familiar with. The video, in particular, went well above and beyond the parameters of the assignment. Aaleyah created a whole new story based on the one we read, extending the original while staying true to its themes. It stands on its own as a work of art.”
