In Week 14 of Algebra I, students begin learning about dimensional analysis in 3 dimensions: for example, converting 3 cubic meters to cubic yards. As a way to bring a hands-on element to moving from 2-dimensional analysis to 3-dimensional analysis, students worked with pieces of paper folded six times to see how changes in three dimensions (cutting out sections of the folds) would bring change in two dimensions (the unfolded paper). Creating beautiful snowflakes was a happy result!
