Summer German Reading Club

Summer course. The WTMA Summer German Reading Club is designed to keep German students practicing their language skills and engaged in reading and discussion over the summer break. Students will come together with their instructor once a week to talk about that week’s reading and learn about two of the countries where German is spoken. This class is appropriate for students who have completed German I, German II, German III, or German IV with the Well-Trained Mind Academy. All texts are accessible to students at these levels. Students with more of a background in German will be given additional readings, in addition to the required readings. While the focus during class will be on the main text, excerpts from the more advanced supplemental readings may be introduced into the discussion, during which time more advanced students are encouraged, but not required, to help facilitate class discussion by explaining to their peers main ideas, points of interest, etc.

There are no formal written assignments — class attendance and participation is the only requirement (in addition to reading the texts).  Students who participate in all 8 sessions will receive a WTMA Summer Reading Club t-shirt. Participation credit is earned by attending the live class or by watching the recording of a class and then completing a discussion board response based on a prompt given by the instructor. You may find these prompts under “discussion board” on our course Blackboard page.
