Korean I
Full-year course. Korean I is an introductory course designed for students with no prior knowledge of the Korean language. It aims to inspire student’s interest in Korean language and culture while building a strong foundation for further study. The course develops essential skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, while introducing key aspects of Korean culture. Instruction is aligned with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, emphasizing the five goal areas: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.
Students begin by learning the Korean writing system, Hangeul, including its sound system and basic pronunciation patterns. Through a combination of structured instruction and interactive practice, students will develop the ability to introduce themselves and respond to simple questions on familiar topics; provide basic personal information with accuracy using Hangul; recognize and understand common spoken expressions in everyday interactions; and comprehend
short, simple texts conveying basic information written in Hangeul.
Korean I Information
- Class meets three times per week for 50-55 minutes, or twice per week for one hour and fifteen minutes.
- Class cap: 15 students.
- Designed for grades 8-12.
- Students may be awarded 1 World Languages credit upon completion of this course.
