Common Hesitations About Homeschooling

Allison DonnellyUncategorized

As more families explore alternatives to traditional brick-and-mortar schools, many understandably have hesitations about moving to online education.

At the Well-Trained Mind Academy, we’ve seen how students can flourish in a live online learning environment. Read on for our perspective on some of the most common hesitations.

 1) Self-Discipline & Accountability

Switching to online learning requires a degree of self-discipline that may be unfamiliar to some students. WTMA students benefit from the structure that comes from live, online classes, weekly assignments, and clearly defined expectations that help them develop essential skills like time management and accountability.

While a level of parental involvement is essential to success at WTMA, we believe it’s important that students work individually and are personally invested in their education.

2) Socialization & Making Friends

One of the most common concerns about online learning is social isolation. While it’s true that the school day may look different, WTMA fosters an environment where students can engage with peers and instructors in real-time through our live, online classes.

We find that students often bond in the safe learning environment offered by WTMA, as classmates from a variety of backgrounds learn and discuss ideas together. Additionally, WTMA organizes in-person field trips and gatherings to connect and nurture friendships offline.

3) Academic Rigor

Some parents worry that online education won’t provide the same level of rigor as traditional schooling. At The Well-Trained Mind Academy, our teaching methods follow the classical trivium: starting with foundational knowledge, moving to logic and argumentation, and finally teaching students to express their ideas.

All of our instructors have years of experience in teaching, tutoring, homeschooling, or a combination of all three, giving them a well-rounded educational approach.

Our high-quality instruction builds critical thinking and a lifelong passion for learning.

4) Customization & Flexibility

A common concern about online learning is whether it offers enough flexibility, especially for those coming from a homeschooling background. At WTMA, all of our courses are a la carte, allowing students to take as few or as many as they need. To ensure your student is on the right track, we offer a number of resources on Curriculum Planning. We offer full-year, one-semester, and summer courses, giving families the freedom to create a schedule that fits their lifestyle while achieving their academic goals.

5) Technology

Parents sometimes have concerns about technology requirements and whether their child will navigate the online learning environment effectively. Our online classrooms are hosted by Blackboard, a widely used platform in secondary and higher education for classroom instruction, assignments, and grade management. Our instructors bring experience in the unique quirks of online learning to their classrooms and are well-versed in our technology platforms to ensure each class goes smoothly.
