Starting the 2026-2027 Year: Reflections from Back-to-School Night
At a recent Back-to-School Night, one of many online events we host during the year, we welcomed our new students, introducing them to our philosophy of teaching critical thought, analysis, and clear and fluent self-expression.
Whether you homeschool your students, supplement their brick and mortar school education at home, participate in a co-op or are just learning more about your educational options, we at the Well-Trained Mind Academy have been helping parents for 12 years achieve their educational goals for their students, no matter what that path looks like for their family.
In 2014, we began with just a few core classes and a small group of students and instructors. Now, as we start the 2026-2027 school year, we offer over 200 courses, have over 40 dedicated instructors, and have a vibrant, growing student community. Some parents utilize our classes to help their students supplement core classes, perhaps focusing on a needed elective like Study Skills or earning a language credit in one of our very popular world language classes. Many of our students complete all of their classes with us, too, beginning in middle school and continuing on to graduation. Whether you as a parent struggle to teach one specific subject and need more support in that area, or whether you identify a subject where your student’s current school is not meeting your needs, we can help.
Is WTMA a good option for your students? Our founder Dr. Susan Wise Bauer summed up our philosophy best. While no one can make a student love a particular subject or class, “our task…particularly as an Academy, is to keep a space open so students can explore learning and mature into loving it.”
