Cooking Club: Family Meals Around the World
Get comfortable in your kitchen! In Cooking Club, middle and high school students will learn how to use basic kitchen tools and appliances while cooking delicious, cozy meals from around the world, and the whole family can savor the results.
Sample Menu
- Black bean and cheese quesadillas with side salad (Central America)
- Skills: getting ingredients together before beginning; grating cheese; safely cutting avocado
- Chicken, lentils, and rice with crispy onions (Lebanon)
- Skills: poaching chicken; slicing and frying onions
- Triple-decker grilled ham and cheese sandwiches with tomato bisque (France)
- Skills: prepping two dishes at the same time; using the blender or food processor
- One-bowl almond cake with homemade whipped cream (Spain)
- Skills: Using the oven; judging if a cake is baked; whipping your own cream
- Stir-fried eggs and tomatoes over rice (China)
- Skills: Managing a VERY hot skillet safely; cooking non-sticky rice so it comes out sticky
- Yakisoba (Japan)
- Skill: Chopping everything before you start cooking
- Bulgogi-style ground beef lettuce wraps with spicy potatoes (South Korea)
- Skill: prepping three dishes at the same time
- Purin (a Japanese take on flan) Skill: using a water bath in the oven without making a huge mess
**Parental supervision recommended for students who have never used a sharp knife or a stove.
