Full-year course. This introductory course is designed to excite students about the language and cultures of French-speaking countries and give them a foundation for continued study in high school or at the college level. Over the course of the academic year, students will learn how to talk about their likes and dislikes, describe other people’s personalities and appearance, talk about favorite foods and order in a restaurant, and talk about travel using prepositions. Students will use skills in the following areas and build global competency skills for future careers and experience based on the World-readiness Standards for Learning Languages from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.
French I is designed for high school students (students in the rhetoric stage). We recommend that middle school students (students in the logic stage) begin their French studies with French 1A. To see how our middle school offerings lead into high school, see our Approach to Learning Foreign Languages. Note: We do not offer a delayed section for this course due to the live interaction that is key to learning language.
